Free Woodwork Video Lesson 3 From The Neon Saw Workshop

Now that we’re up and running, here we go with the next video in this first free series introducing the new woodworker to the basic kit of handtools. All those featured here are tried and tested for their indispensability and general usefulness and, with the addition of one or two power tools – notably a cordless drill – will enable you to take on nearly any woodworking or DIY job you might encounter.

It’s worth pointing out that the info contained in the videos isn’t the full, complete and definitive guide to all tools everywhere, but is an entry-level introduction and simple explanation of the mostly commonly used woodworking tools in the average kitbag.

Woodworker’s Kitbag – The Hammer

Falsely assumed to be just a blunt instrument for general pounding and striking duties, the hammer’s importance in the toolkit means it has to be near the top in terms of usefulness. Just try carrying out virtually any construction job around the house and you’ll soon realise that there’s no real substitute for a hammer.

About This Free Woodwork Video Lesson

Now that we’ve got down to some actual woodworking facts, this video introduces another basic and essential of hand tools, the Hammer.

In this video, we’ll be looking at the two most useful types available to the woodworker or keen DIYer (and there are many others out there) and discussing there relative merits.  Actual techniques involved in using a hammer are touched upon, but wielding a hammer in earnest will be looked at in the next – and improved – series, soon to come.

So, if this video has found favour with you – and I sincerely hope it has – please keep a look out for the next one in which we’ll be looking at planes. The plane occupies a distinctive place in the woodworker’s kit, and rightly so. At first glance it’s a complex tool but don’t be daunted, the pleasure and satisfaction in using one is enormous and has been rated favourite hand tool by a large majority of my students over the years.

As with most hand tools, there’s more to this than you first might think, so stay tuned, and in the meantime please forward this video series to anyone you think might enjoy it or encourage them to sign up to the Neon Saw mailing list when they’ll automatically receive all future videos to come.
