Free Woodwork Video Lesson 4 From The Neon Saw Workshop

Here we go then with the next video in this free series introducing the new woodworker to the basic kit of handtools. All the tools featured here are tried and tested for their indispensability and general usefulness and, with the addition of one or two power tools – notably a cordless drill – will enable you to take on nearly any woodworking or DIY job you might encounter.

It’s worth pointing out that the info contained in the videos isn’t the full, complete and definitive guide to all tools everywhere, but is an entry-level introduction and simple explanation of the mostly commonly used woodworking tools in the average kitbag.

Woodworker’s Kitbag – Planes

The plane is one of the most important tools in the woodworker’s kit, and like many, has been around in one form or another for thousands of years. Although the setting up of a plane may be quite daunting at first, once you’re familiar with it you’ll find it helps take your woodworking to a new level. Using a plane is a very satisfying experience, a fact supported by many of my workshop students over the years.

About This Free Woodwork Video Lesson

In this short video we take a look at the three most popular and useful planes out there – and there are very many indeed! These are the Block plane, designed primarily for end-grain work, the Smoothing plane (a good first plane to buy) and the Jack plane, so-called because it’s good at many things (just like the jack-of-all-trades that gives it its name).

So, if this video has found favour with you – and I sincerely hope it has – please keep a look out for the next one in which we’ll be looking at chisels. Possibly one of the most useful of all edge tools, a set of sharp chisels in your kit really tells the world that you’re taking your woodworking seriously.

As with most hand tools, there’s more to this than you first might think, so stay tuned, and in the meantime please forward this video series to anyone you think might enjoy it or encourage them to sign up to the Neon Saw mailing list when they’ll automatically receive all future videos to come.
